This week a city advisory board unanimously approved the design of the Orange Peel’s proposed outdoor music venue on Thompson Street along the Swannanoa River. Much of the discussion centered on how the venue would design the space with durability and resiliency in mind, knowing that the site has flooded in the past and likely will again. Design Review Committee members also urged improvements to the project’s entranceway, landscaping plan and site lighting.

The Orange Peel music venue’s new ownership team, working under the name Big Picture Concert Group LLC, recently submitted plans for an outdoor music venue in east Asheville with a large stage and multiple shipping containers repurposed for restrooms, a bar and merchandise sales. The group is planning for a capacity of up to 6,000 concert-goers, according to its development application.

The Orange Peel’s venue project team came before the city’s Design Review Committee during the advisory board’s regular Nov. 20 meeting. It’s the first time the Orange Peel development team has described in detail its venue plans. The review committee members present were: Chairwoman Christina Roush, and members Bryan Moffitt, Joe Balcken, Eddie Dewey, Jeremy Goldstein, Stu Helm, Michael McDonough and Ricardo Seijo.

Here’s a breakdown of the information-packed session:
